I got my B.S. (Naval Architecture) in 1991, from Harbin Engineering University, M.S (Ocean Engineering) in 1995, from Tianjin University, and Ph.D. (Civil Engineering) in 2002 from University of Central Florida. In 2003, I joined the Department of Maritime Systems Engineering at Texas A&M University at Galveston. My area of specialty is Structural Engineering. My research focuses on multi-hazard mitigation of infrastructure systems....
I teach courses in the area of structural engineering. I teach through a hand-on approach which enables students develop problem solving skills through practice following my easy to follow worked examples. I encourage students to establish quantitative relationships between key parameters from an equation, rather than simply plugging numbers into the equation to get the answer. I make connections between the material in my courses and real-world problems, applications, and experiences.
In 1991, when I was a graduate student in Tianjin University, an English teacher named John Bradson gave me a English-Chinese Bible and some booklets about Christianity. In 1992, I accepted Jesus as my personal savior. I came to the United States two days before Christmas in 2007. In May 2008, my wife and I attended a retreat at Lake Yale Baptist Conference Center in Leesburg, Florida and were baptized on the same day (May 24).
